Lesson description
This lesson addresses the big questions about Britain’s actions in the years leading up to the outbreak of World War Two in 1939. Namely, could war have been avoided? And, if so, was Britain’s policy of appeasement towards Adolf Hitler a mistake?
This lesson contains:
- A look at the state of Britain, its politics, its army, and its empire in the 1930s and why appeasement was believed to be a viable option by the British government.
- An analysis of British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, his actions in the lead up to the war, and his policy of appeasement.
- A chance for students to consider the popular historical narrative around Chamberlain’s policy of appeasement, allowing them to reach their own informed conclusions.
