Lesson description

At the start of the 20th century, the British Empire spanned one-quarter of the world’s land mass and yet, by 1997, Britain was waving goodbye to the last of its colonies in Hong Kong. So, how exactly did the sun set so quickly on the British Empire?

This lesson contains:

  • A look at the most significant reasons, factors, and themes that fuelled the collapse of the British Empire, including the fight for nationalism and economic struggles.
  • The chronology of key events that impacted the British Empire in the 20th century, such as the two world wars, Indian independence, and the Suez Crisis.
  • An analysis of which events were the most important and had the biggest influence on the history of the British Empire and its eventual demise.
